We will be helping our friends build a church sanctuary. The building will be of concrete block. Normally in these areas the lower 3 rows will be large, solid rock cut from a mountain. These blocks weigh about 90 pounds each. These are used because this area is susceptible to earthquakes helping stability.
Currently the church has only a pole barn type structure with tin roof and one wall where the pulpit is. The floor is dirt but there are benches and chairs for folks to sit. Upon our arrival there hopefully will be a foundation and footers (the deep concrete supports for the walls) installed. From there the blocks stack on top of the footers. Generally the building will be a single room about 90’ long by 30’ wide. The pulpit will be raised a bit and sanctuary will be fully equipped with electric service and lighting.
Bathroom facilities are, well, quite frankly outhouses. The facilities will have a pit dug on which the toilet sits. The facility will have walls of course (at least 3 anyway).
Roofing will consist of tin sheeting on trusses of steel. Trusses will have to be shaped and welded to fit as well as painted before installation.
Air conditioning…none. Plumbing, probably not, unless a kitchen is to be a part.
OUTREACH MINISTRY
Several outreach ministries will be a part of this mission. These include but may not be limited to:
BIBLE SCHOOL. We call it VBS but in Nicaragua school will be in session so we will have to work around it. They typically have 2 daily sessions, one in the morning and afternoon, weekends off. Activities will be typical VBS style.
SPORTS MINISTRY. At the project site there is room for field activities so a good football (soccer) game will give us the opportunity to meet those not a part of the church. Maybe an introduction to our football, frisbee or other games will make some connections. NURSING HOME. We will have the chance to minister to those in a nursing home. Just a visit will give such a thrill to those seniors who are often forgotten by their friends and family.
HOSPITAL. Visiting those in the hospital can be good medicine indeed and we intend to give some of that medicine. ORPHANAGE. There is a local children’s home we will visit. What a ministry we can have as these young ones truly have no one to care. Almost discarded and unwanted by society we can share that Jesus love and His hope. JESUS FILM. The Jesus Film Project has transformed the world. We will have the film and will show this several times (publically). Around the world thousands have come to His salvation through this 2 hour film.
Of course all we do and wherever we do it is ministry. Our speech, our very actions will be ministry unto Him. You will learn that the community will know we are there, actually we will be the talk of the town. Not so much by our visit but by the way we act and what we do.
